Carolyn Pearce Strawberry Fayre heart etui 20: the inner heart panels

I am currently stitching the Carolyn Pearce Strawberry Fayre heart etui as a stitchalong project. This week, I am stitching the inner heart panels (there are four of them, all the same). See the end of this post for all the information you’ll need to join in!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~  ***  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I thought when I started to stitch these inner heart panels for the etui that they wouldn’t take long. Ha ha! Stitching the same thing four times over does actually take a while….and it’s not all that interesting at times, either, to be doing the same motifs over and over.
Here’s the pattern that needs stitching four times:
Carolyn Pearce Strawberry Fayre heart etui
As before, the drawn lines for the leaves and the berry placements look the same on the pullout sheet from the magazine, so I had to bear in mind that some of those ‘teardrop’ shapes would be berries, not leaves.
The actual stitching of the stems, leaves, and flowers, is done using the same stitches and threads as on the front and back panels, so the instructions in Inspirations issue 95 are quite brief for these inner heart panels – they just say things like ‘stitch the leaves as on the front panel’. This meant I was having to flip backwards and forwards through the magazine a lot, which became annoying. So, in the end, I spent ten minutes writing out ONE definitive list of the stitches and threads needed for each element. Then I could put the magazine away, and just refer to my own notes, which I found to be much less fiddly  🙂
I’ll briefly go through the order that I stitched each section – if you need more information about how to do these stitches, see the blog posts about the Front Panel, as I give more details when a stitch is first used each time.
This stem is done in chain stitch, as before, but looks much better once it’s been highlighted with the Whip Stitch and the Stem Stitch highlighting top and bottom.
These little flowers don’t take long, and are very cute:
Instead of doing three types of filling stitches on these small leaves, I decided to do all three in Vandyke Stitch, as they are so small you can hardly see the filling pattern once they are completed.
The other set of three leaves was done as per the instructions, using Tied Wheatear Stitch.
My berries are improving, gradually….here is the felt padding in place:
And here is the berry with the completed Beaded Oyster Stitch. I’ve found that the best way to fill the area is to do the five stitches down the centre of the berry, and then ‘flood fill’ with more stitches up from the base to the top, doing both sides at once rather than left side then right side.
The Needlewoven Picots for sepals complete the berries:
Finally, I made the beaded forget-me-nots in two shades of blue:
This is how one panel looks, when completed. The lower part of each heart shape will be covered with the attached pockets for the smalls.
Here are all four panels, with their stitching completed:
They do look good, now they’re done, but it hasn’t been my favourite part of this project. It’s taken longer than I anticipated, and the repetition is getting boring! But my berries have definitely improved  🙂
~~~INFORMATION~~~

The Strawberry Fayre design, plus the complete list of materials, appears in Inspirations magazine number 95The publishers do sell a full materials pack  (not including the mother of pearl ruler though!), but it’s rather expensive, so if you can use your stash, and just fill in with bits and pieces, then so much the better! The magazine is published in Australia – if you live in the UK, as I do, it is cheaper to buy a back copy from Manor House Magazines, and save a lot on the shipping.

EDIT: The materials pack from Inspirations, and the magazine from Manor House in the UK are not available any more as at March 2018 – I don’t know if any more stocks will be available now, unfortunately. The publishers may bring out a digital pattern pack later, which they sometimes do with popular projects from their magazines, but we’ll have to wait and see…..

Carolyn Pearce Strawberry Fayre heart etui 19: the back panel, part two

I am currently stitching the Carolyn Pearce Strawberry Fayre heart etui as a stitchalong project. This week, I’m embroidering the leaves on the back panel. See the end of this post for all the information you’ll need to join in!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~  ***  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As these leaves are repeats (almost) of the leaves that I stitched on the front panel, they didn’t take me long to do! And I think they’ve come out neater than the front panel’s ones, too. But as I never unpick anything unless it’s really vile, the slightly wobbly ones from the front panel will have to stay like that!
These are the four leaves, half way through. The threads used, and the filling stitches, are the same as on the front panel, with one of the fillings done twice. I still think that these fiddly filling stitches would work better if there was more room for them, but at least I can stitch them faster, now that I’ve had a bit of practice. In this image, I’ve done the chain stitch padding, ready for the close Buttonhole stitch edgings. I still don’t quite understand why the padding is stitched in such a different shade from the top stitches, as, if you place your Buttonhole stitches a bit wide, the pale colour will show through  😦
Carolyn Pearce Strawberry Fayre heart etui
Here’s the whole back panel, so you can see the leaves with the padding, now covered with close Buttonhole stitch filling.
Carolyn Pearce Strawberry Fayre heart etui
And here’s the front panel again – you can see how much of the back panel’s motifs are taken from the front one, but there’s enough variation to make it interesting to stitch. And none of those pesky raspberries/strawberries to do, either!!!
Carolyn Pearce Strawberry Fayre heart etui
The next part I’m going to tackle is the four inner panels, which have embroidery only along the top edges of each heart, before moving on to the inner pockets and smalls. It’s slowly coming together…!
Carolyn Pearce Strawberry Fayre heart etui 18: the back panel, part one
I am currently stitching the Carolyn Pearce Strawberry Fayre heart etui as a stitchalong project. Now that the front panel has been completed, I’m starting on the back panel. See the end of this post for all the information you’ll need to join in!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~  ***  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The back panel of the Strawberry Fayre heart etui uses similar motifs to the front, but it’s a simpler design. This means that it should be quicker to do! I know of two people who are joining in with the stitchalong who did this panel first, to get practice at doing the flowers and stems, so that their front panel would be more ‘perfect’, as they’d already have practiced on the back part! As I’m doing this to help people, I’m sort of following the instructions from the magazine as far as possible, otherwise I might have started with the back panel too.

Carolyn Pearce Strawberry Fayre heart etui

The order of stitching is fairly similar to the front. The stems are stitched first (and I chose to do the little flowers at the outer edges), and then the lily flower in the centre. This time, I made sure that I corrected the transferred outline for the lower curving petal on the right before stitching the Satin Stitch padding, so that the ‘cutout shape’ on the inner edge on each side is more even (just!).

Carolyn Pearce Strawberry Fayre heart etui

Here you can see how the stitches are starting to build up to make a nicely textured piece of embroidery, even though it’s not finished yet.

Carolyn Pearce Strawberry Fayre heart etui

Allowing for the fact that my photos have come out looking like completely different colours (due to me taking one in daylight and one in artificial light), it’s still interesting to compare the lily flowers from the front and back panels. Here’s the one on the back:

Carolyn Pearce Strawberry Fayre heart etui

And here’s the one on the front, with the squiffy lower right petal:

Carolyn Pearce Strawberry Fayre heart etui

I like the back panel lily much more than the front one. I think I got the hang of the overlay stitches more by the time I’d ‘practiced’ on the front one. If I had more patience, I’d have done a sample one first, on spare fabric, but I never have that kind of patience with projects.

It was much quicker to stitch the lily on the back panel, once I’d worked out how to do the stitches and decided which colours to use, so when I get on to the inner pieces of the etui, it should speed up even more, as there’s quite a lot of repetition in this project.

Carolyn Pearce Strawberry Fayre heart etui 17: your stitching!

I am currently stitching the Carolyn Pearce Strawberry Fayre heart etui as a stitchalong project. See the end of this post for all the information you’ll need to join in!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~  ***  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This week, as I’ve completed the embroidery on the front panel, I was going to feature images of your stitching, as several of you have been stitching it along with me….BUT, you seem to be a rather modest lot, as I’ve only had two people send in images of their heart etui panels to feature! But they’re really good ones, so read on…..
My Strawberry Fayre front panel embroidery looks like this:
Carolyn Pearce Strawberry Fayre heart etui
The images I received were by Jeanette, from Australia, and she has done an amazing job on her heart etui (in fact, she’s almost finished hers, but I’m not going to let you see all of her pictures until I have reached the point that she’s got to!!).
This is the front panel of Jeanette’s etui:
Carolyn Pearce Strawberry Fayre heart etui
Jeanette is stitching her etui using the materials pack that she bought direct from the Inspirations magazine, so her colours are quite a bit different from mine. I like both – they are just different!
This is Jeanette’s panel once she has mounted it onto the heart-shaped padded plastic shape, ready to make into the etui. It looks much more ‘real’ like this, doesn’t it?
Carolyn Pearce Strawberry Fayre heart etui
Jeanette has actually almost finished hers, and sent me some very tempting images of the rest of the etui, but I’m not going to show you those just yet! You’ll have to wait!
Alexandra sent in this image of her panel, which is almost finished:
Carolyn Pearce Strawberry Fayre heart etui
She says, “I really am enjoying this project and have learnt a great deal as I’ve gone along. I’ve still got the strawberries/raspberries to finish and have found them challenging, I really don’t see the point of the oyster stitch when it has a bead on top, but that’s just choice. I have mainly used the threads suggested but there are some substitutions. I also changed the primrose and calyx as I didn’t like the yellow.”
Isn’t it interesting how each stitcher’s personality comes out through their stitching?
The next bit I’m going to stitch from this project is the back panel, which should be a lot quicker to do than the front was, as there’s not so much embroidery on it, and most of the elements are very similar to the front panel.
